Calgary council to discuss closure of supervised consumption site at Sheldon Chumir centre

While council will vote later this month, the site's fate ultimately lies with the province, says Mayor Gondek

City council will vote later this month on whether to close a supervised drug consumption site in the Beltline, after the executive committee endorsed a councillor’s pitch Wednesday to prompt the discussion.

But despite the upcoming vote, Calgary’s mayor insists the site’s fate is not up to council, but rather the provincial government.

On Wednesday, Mayor Jyoti Gondek sent a letter to Alberta Mental Health and Addiction Minister Dan Williams, in response to comments he made last week about seeking her approval before the province decides to shutter the Safeworks site at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre on 4th Street S.W.
