Flames took several hours to extinguish, officials say

by · Calgary Herald

Thousands of turkey chicks died in a Vulcan County barn fire early Wednesday morning.

At 2:28 a.m. on Wednesday, Vulcan County Emergency Services got a call that a structure was on fire.

Firefighters responded but arrived to find the barn — housing 9,000 two-week-old turkey chicks — fully engulfed in flames.

The fire took several hours to put out, but crews prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.

No people were hurt.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The fire broke out on a farm northeast of Vulcan, about 120 kilometres southeast of Calgary.
