New St Ann custos says youth empowerment will be priority

· The Gleaner

When businessman Joseph ‘Joey’ Issa was recently announced as the new custos of St Ann, it was hardly a surprise for persons who know him or who have been around him for any period of time.

Known for his business acumen and philanthropic spirit, Issa’s ascent to the position of “First Citizen” of the parish is not merely a reflection of his professional accomplishments but, as many persons in St Ann will attest, it is also a testament to his commitment to public service and community upliftment.

Issa told JIS News that one of his key priorities as custos is youth empowerment, as the young people are the future leaders of Jamaica, and he is determined to invest “time and effort” in their development.

He said that he hoped to accomplish this by fostering partnerships with local schools and organisations and by creating more opportunities for engagement, leadership training, and skills development.

“Programmes that encourage entrepreneurship among young people will also be high on my agenda, as it is my belief that equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge will enable them to create their own paths and contribute positively to their communities,” Issa added.

For her part, former custos, Norma Walters, said she has known Issa for many years, and “the parish of St Ann couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated person to take up the reins as custos”.

“He has been in the parish for most of his adult life and has contributed immensely to public service and community development. He is a remarkable Jamaican and will do very well serving the people of the Garden Parish,” she said.

Walters, who stepped down several months ago after spending 10 years at the helm, said that Issa’s penchant for reaching out and his willingness to listen has brought him close to persons, giving him an important platform to start his tenure.

KNACK FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Issa’s journey began in the bustling world of the hotel business. The son of iconic hotelier, John Issa of SuperClubs fame, Custos Issa, having spent years distinguishing himself in the tourism sector, has not only demonstrated an exceptional knack for entrepreneurship, but his ventures, which include the successful Cool Group of Companies, have contributed significantly to the local economy and also set the standard for corporate responsibility in Jamaica.

With a keen eye for opportunities, Issa has navigated the ever-changing landscape of tourism and hospitality, ensuring that his businesses thrive, while adhering to a philosophy of giving back. His innovative strategies and leadership have earned him recognition as a key player in Jamaica’s tourism sector, fostering job creation and economic growth.

“Here in St Ann, Joey Issa … now Custos Issa … is seen and known as a winner,” said Senior Director of the Taj Mahal Plaza, Ocho Rios, Sanju Chatani.

“Whether it’s business or public service, he is always coming through … always going the extra mile. He is a true community man … a family man … very approachable and down to earth,” Chatani said.

Issa’s leadership skills were further honed during his tenure as president of the St Ann Chamber of Commerce, where he consistently advocated for local businesses and worked tirelessly to create a conducive environment for entrepreneurship.

His leadership was characterised by a collaborative approach, bringing together various stakeholders to address the challenges facing the local economy.

For St Ann’s Bay mayor, Councillor Michael Belnavis, Issa, as a justice of the peace, has also played a crucial role in the community’s legal affairs, adding that “his commitment to justice and fairness has made him a respected figure in St Ann”.

“He has used his position to mediate disputes, promote peace, and ensure that the voices of the community are heard. This dedication to service exemplifies his belief that leadership is not just about authority but about uplifting others and fostering a sense of belonging,” Belnavis said.

EFFECT REAL CHANGE

Meanwhile, the new custos further noted that in addition to focusing on education and youth empowerment, he is also committed to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of St Ann, adding that the parish is home to historical landmarks, vibrant traditions, and a diverse array of cultural practices.

He said that he plans to champion the collaboration between local artists, historians, and cultural organisations to ensure that the heritage of St Ann is celebrated and passed down.

The custos, a ceremonial representative of the governor general, plays a vital role in promoting community engagement, cultural heritage, and social cohesion.

Issa said that he is confident that his extensive background in business and the work he has been doing over the years with entities such as the craft traders association, as well as transport operators, will position him to address the diverse needs of the St Ann community.

“Together, we can build a brighter future for St Ann. It’s not just about what we can do individually, but how we can come together as a community to effect real change. My vision for St Ann includes not only economic growth but also a focus on health, education, and social welfare,” he added.
