Murder probe launched after man in his 60s dies after 'fight'

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died at a house following a 'fight' in the early hours of this morning.

Police were called to the scene following a disturbance at a property in Wallsend, North Tyneside, at 5am today.

It was reported that a man in his 60s had sustained 'serious injuries', police say that they were 'consistent with being caused by an assault'.

Emergency services attended and despite the efforts of medics, the man was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. 

Officers have launched a murder investigation following the man's death and two men – aged 41 and 34 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder. They are both currently in police custody.

The dead man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained police officers.

A police forensics team wearing white overalls and a police dog were also seen at the scene as the investigation got underway. 

Other officers were seen going door to door with a clipboard to make inquiries. 

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Steel, of Northumbria Police's Major Investigation Team, said: 'First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly passed away at this difficult time.

'I would ask that their privacy is respected as they look to process what has happened.

'We have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the man's death, which we are treating as suspicious.

'Two people have been arrested and they remain in police custody at this time.'

He added: 'I would appeal to anyone who may have information regarding our investigation to contact us immediately
