Ukrainian woman weightlifting champion killed on frontline by Russia

A Ukrainian woman weightlifting champion who fought as a sniper in the war has been killed by Russia.

Nina Pashkevych, 47, died while on a frontline mission in Donetsk region.

In April, she had returned from the war to win the Ukrainian Weightlifting Championship, say reports.

The Zdolbuniv city administration in Rivno region said: 'It is with indescribable pain that we inform you that sniper Nina Pashkevich died while performing a combat mission in Donetsk region.

'She will be forever 47. May she always be remembered.'

Ms Pashkevych was a Ukrainian master of sport with more than 100 awards to her name. 

The popular sportswoman was also a 'coach of Ukrainian and European champions.

'Even while in the military, the servicewoman took part in competitions.'

She was both a sniper and a combat medic on the frontline after volunteering to fight for her country after Russia's 2022 invasion.

Details of how she died have not been given.

She worked as a security guard before being enlisted to fight in the war.

Her funeral was being held today.
