Double murder investigation launched in Manchester as man is arrested

by · Mail Online

Police in Manchester have launched a double murder investigation after two men were found stabbed to death in the street.

Emergency services were called to Great Southern Street in Moss Side, less than two miles south of the city centre, after the men were discovered.

Despite the best efforts of first responders both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has arrested one man in his 20s on suspicion of murder and established a cordon as it carries out an investigation.

The force says there is no wider threat to the public - and has urged locals to stay away from the area as it carries out inquiries.

The full length of Great Southern Street has been closed to traffic, according to traffic data platform Inrix.

Two forensic tents have been established: one in the middle of the road at the junction of Great Southern Street and Kippax Street and a second close to the junction with Crofton Street around 100 metres east.

Forensic scene of crime officers in white overalls and PPE could be seen outside both tents.

Uniformed officers guarded each end of the cordon while one stood outside the nearby Alfurqan Islamic Centre.

One of the street's residents claims he's not been allowed to leave his house this morning, due to the large police presence outside.

He said: 'We can't go outside at the moment. I saw it this morning, about 4am - out of my window, there was a man laying on the floor and another laying further ahead.

'I woke up to blue lights and sirens - my neighbour has since told me they were the one who called the police.

'I can't leave the house at all at the moment, I'm completely blocked off.

'It's terrifying - the first time I've seen something like this in my entire life.'

The Manchester Evening News reported that the individuals who died had suffered stab injuries.

Officers were reported to have arrived on the scene some time around 5am.

GMP said in a statement: 'There is an emergency service presence on Great Southern Street in Moss Side this morning (Sunday 17 November 2024).

'Officers were called at around 5am to reports that two people had been stabbed.

'Officers alongside colleagues in the emergency services attended and despite the best efforts of first responders two men were treated at the scene for their injuries. They have both sadly been pronounced dead.

'We have arrested one man in his 20s who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for questioning and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

'We are treating this as an isolated incident with no threat to the wider public.

'We thank the public for their cooperation and patience as there is a cordon in place on Great Southern Street and into the surrounding area.

'We are asking the public to continue avoiding the area as there is a large emergency service presence while we establish the full circumstances of the incident this morning.'
