Bowls clubs across the country could close as councils cannot afford to mow the greens.

Scores of clubs are set to have their maintenance funding cut, with elderly members unable to stump up the costs themselves.

This week, Newham Council said it would stop funding three bowling greens in east London to save £24,000 a year.

Daniel Major, 54, secretary of the Central Park Bowls Club, told The Sunday Telegraph: 'Our members are all old people.

'They can't afford losing their winter fuel payment, let alone maintaining the green.' Jon Cockcroft, of Bowls England, branded the cuts 'disappointing'.

He said: 'Bowls is an affordable sport which provides social interaction among [the elderly].'

Newham Council said it had been forced to make 'tough decisions'.
