Angela Rayner's Ibiza DJ booth party was an £836 freebie

by · Mail Online

Angela Rayner accepted £836-worth of freebies while raving in Ibiza, it emerged last night.

The Deputy Prime Minister registered the hospitality as being for a ‘visit to [a] DJ booth’ at Hi Ibiza nightclub on the Spanish party island.

Footage of Ms Rayner, who is also the Housing Secretary, raving and cheering during the night out with actress Denise van Outen later emerged.

It sparked a backlash because just hours before, Ms Rayner had met mayors and housing regulators to discuss speeding up the removal of dangerous cladding from thousands of residential buildings after a major fire at a block of flats in east London and in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster. Critics questioned whether it was appropriate behaviour.

Ms Rayner registered the freebie as being donated by Ayita LLC, an IT firm based in California, in the latest MPs’ register of interests published yesterday.

Inside Angela Rayner's whirlwind Wednesday, from a roundtable on cladding to a rave in Ibiza

It is understood she paid for accommodation and flights herself during the trip to the Spanish island.

Footage of the night out in August showed the minister dressed in red as she danced to a remix of Gotye’s hit song Somebody That I Used to Know.

In the footage that was posted to Instagram by Ms van Outen, Ms Rayner is seen jumping and dancing with DJ Fisher.

Ms Rayner clutches a bottle in one hand as lights blaze into the crowd behind her.

Defending herself after the video emerged, she told Sky News: ‘I take my job really seriously, and I’m always in parliament doing what needs to be done.’

She added: ‘I was on holiday for a couple of days, I mean you can criticise my dancing, it is subjective, but...I take my job really seriously and what I do. You’ve got to have downtime as well. Everybody has to have downtime.

‘Yes I’m working class, I like a dance, I like dance music.’

The footage of Ms Rayner was filmed after the Prime Minister warned of ‘painful’ times ahead for Britons before ‘difficult’ economic choices in the upcoming winter budget. Sir Keir warned that October’s financial statement – the first by Labour in 14 years – would involve ‘short-term pain’.

His remarks were seen as a further sign that he is preparing the public for Chancellor Rachel Reeves to unveil a swathe of tax rises and public service cuts as she seeks to balance the books.

A self-confessed party animal, the Deputy Prime Minister has previously boasted of her 12-hour-plus ‘rave’ sessions and her favourite drink, a ‘venom’ cocktail.
