Female prison officer had 'relationship with inmate' at HMP Berwyn

A female prison officer at a notorious men's jail in Wales was today accused of having an illicit relationship with a prisoner.

Jessica McCleary, 28, of Froncysyllte, Llangollen, appeared before magistrates at Wrexham charged with misconduct in public office.

The alleged relationship was at Berwyn jail, Wrexham, with inmate Levi Weekes.

The court heard McCleary is accused of entering into a relationship with Weekes between October 25 and November 4 last year.

She was bailed to appear before Mold crown court next month. A pre-sentence report was ordered.

Prosecutor Justin Espie said McCleary had formed a relationship with Weekes and notes between the pair were recovered. 

The jail holds 2,000 men including inmates from North Wales, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham and members of organised crime gangs.
