An Ohio TV reporter is fighting for her life after being shot by a gunman who subsequently killed himself.

Winnie Dortch, 34, was seriously injured in Monday's shooting in Lakewood, Ohio, which cops described as a domestic dispute, according to The Express Tribune.

Lakewood police said they received calls of two people arguing around Clifton Boulevard just before 8am.

Cops rushed to a house to discover the gravely-injured journalist on the sidewalk, alongside the shooter.

He had turned the gun on himself and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The shooter has not been named. Lakewood detectives say he and Dortch were 'familiar' with one another but have yet to comment further on the relationship.

Dortch was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center in serious condition.

Dortch has a 4-year-old daughter and describes herself as a mother-of-one on her X account. Her colleagues have shared their shock at the incident and wished her a speedy recovery.

She has been a multimedia journalist with Cleveland 19 News for over two years.

WOIO's News Director Brian Sinclair released a statement on Monday: 'This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack.

'She was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries. Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community.'

On September 18, Dortch had announced she accepted a full-time reporter position back in her home city of Chicago for WGN-TV.

She described it as a 'full circle' moment and that her childhood dream was coming true
