Tributes pour in for 'grandmother, 69, 'murdered in botched burglary'

A suspected burglar who allegedly murdered a disabled grandmother during a break-in at her seaside home has appeared in court. 

Dean Mark Albert Mears, 33, is accused of killing Catherine Flynn and aggravated burglary after breaking into her house on Cefndy Road, Rhyl, last Thursday.

He appeared at Mold Crown Court via a video link from Berwyn jail at Wrexham and was further remanded in custody. 

The 69-year-old, who was described as having 'the kindest of hearts', was rushed to hospital with severe injuries but sadly passed away. 

Flowers have been left by mourners outside the semi-detached property, while her friends have raised more than £2,000 to support her family.

One floral tribute had a note saying: 'Rest in Peace Cath.' 

On social media Talia Flynn of Rhyl posted: 'My beautiful Nan. My bestest friend in the entire world.'

A tribute from another social media user said: 'She was the nicest lady you could ever meet, would do anything for anyone, a true queen with a heart of gold.'

Police have renewed an appeal for information - with an increased presence of officers in the area around Rhyl, North Wales, today.  

A North Wales Police statement said: 'Detectives investigating the death of a 69-year-old woman from Rhyl are renewing an appeal for any information that can assist them.

'33-year-old Dean Mark Albert Mears from Kinmel Bay has been charged with murder and burglary with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

'Following the incident last Thursday evening, officers will once again be active in the Cefndy Road area this afternoon, talking to residents and anyone passing through in order to gain as much information as possible.

'Whilst you may see an increased police presence, there is no need for concern and we would like to thank the local community for their patience and support whilst we conduct these vital enquiries.'

Mears of Bodelwyddan Avenue, Kinmel Bay, has been remanded in custody after appearing in Mold Crown Court on Tuesday.
