Rachel Reeves rents out London house after moving into Downing St

Rachel Reeves is believed to have started renting out her London house after moving into her grace-and-favour apartment in Downing Street.

The Chancellor has listed income from a home she owns with her partner on the latest MPs' register of interests.

The amount of the rent is not specified, but houses in the capital can cost tens of thousands of pounds a year.

The move could spark anger as Ms Reeves draws up a Budget that she and Keir Starmer have warned will be painful for Brits, with fears of major tax hikes.

Labour has already faced a massive backlash over stripping millions of pensioners of winter fuel allowance.

As well as living with her family in Downing Street rent-free, Ms Reeves has been given use of the Dorneywood grace-and-favour estate for official duties.

Ms Reeves' updated entry on the Commons register says income on the 'residential' house, described as 'co-owned with a family member', has been received since September 9.

'The rental income is paid jointly to my partner and me,' the entry said.

Ms Reeves has been contacted for comment.

Previous inhabitants of Downing Street have also been criticised for benefiting from renting out their homes, including David Cameron when the coalition was imposing austerity measures.

Keir Starmer and Ms Reeves are set to be insulated from the impact of energy bill hikes in Downing Street as pensioners face a struggle without winter fuel payments.

The PM and Chancellor only pay a taxable benefit on running costs at the grace-and-favour apartments - capped at 10 per cent of their ministerial salaries.

It means that they contribute around £3,000 to cover all utilities and other expenses, and the sum did not go up when the Ofgem cap increased by 10 per cent this week.

Sir Keir is living with his wife Victoria and their two children in the larger flat above No11, while Ms Reeves and her family are above No10.

Downing Street has previously argued it is impossible to separate costs for the flats from the wider ones of running offices and kitchens.

However, there have been suggestions that the accommodation in Downing Street has its drawbacks - after both Sir Keir and Ms Reeves drafted in new feline pets.

One senior government source said last month: 'There's a reason why everyone in Downing Street is getting a cat - the place is riddled with mice.'

Dorneywood is an opulent 18th century residence that was given to the nation by the industrialist Lord Courtauld-Thomson in 1947 as a country home for a senior member of the government.
