Investigations are continuing into an alleged sexual assault after a man was arrested during a series of raids in Newcastle.

Last month, a series of police raids were carried out across the West End and other areas of the city as part of Operation Impact. The operation resulted in a total of 22 arrests and suspected drugs, weapons and cash were seized.

During the day of action, six wanted people were found, while one person was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, another on suspicion of immigration offences and a third person for suspected breach of bail. Two men were also arrested in connection with sexual offences.

One 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of indecent images and a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. On Wednesday, Northumbria Police confirmed that both men have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries. A man in his 30s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and stalking was told he will face no further action.

The operation was launched early on the morning of Friday, September 13 and continued throughout the day. Following one of the morning raids, which was carried out shortly after 8am, three men were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences. A man was also arrested on suspicion of assault, said to have been carried out as he was being led away by officers. Inside one home, £200 of suspected crack cocaine and £100 of suspected cannabis were discovered, alongside £1,000 in suspected illicit cash and a knuckle duster.

Elsewhere in the city, four people were interviewed at the scene of searches following the discovery of suspected Class A drugs and cannabis. The force confirmed that six wanted people were also arrested and seven vehicles suspected of being involved in criminal activity were also "uplifted". One person was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, another on suspicion of immigration offences and a third person for suspected breach of bail.

The force has not yet released updates on the other suspects who were arrested during the raids. Operation Impact is an initiative aimed at tackling drug-dealing, anti-social behaviour and motor crime in local communities.
