Walker woman admits making false allegations including that a car had been driven into her

Hannah Leiper, of Walker, Newcastle, admitted carrying out acts intended to pervert the course of justice and dangerous driving in Lemington

by · ChronicleLive

A Walker woman has admitted exposing people to the risk of arrest by making false allegations. As we reported previously, Hannah Leiper was accused of making false claims to the police that a car had been driven into her and she had been assaulted. A court heard that two people were arrested as a result.

Now Leiper, of Walker, Newcastle, has pleaded guilty to doing acts tending or intended to pervert the course of justice, namely that she "with intent to pervert the course of public justice, did an act which had a tendency to pervert the course of public justice in that she made false allegations which wrongfully exposed other persons to arrest, the risk of imprisonment pending trial, and possibly wrongful conviction and sentence" on October 7 last year. She also admitted dangerous driving in Lemington on the same day.

Full details of what happened were not revealed during a brief hearing. Leiper will be sentenced on December 18 when the facts of the case will be opened and she was further released on conditional bail.

Judge Paul Sloan KC told her: "I'm adjourning sentence in your case to the 18th of December, that's the next date you must be at court. I'm also directing the preparation of a pre-sentence report by the probation service.

"You should understand, the fact I'm adjourning sentence and directing the preparation of a report is not an indication of the sentence that will be imposed. That will be a matter for the judge who deals with your case."
