Devastated Yorkshire family pays tribute to 10-year-old girl killed by pet XL Bully dog
by Samuel Port · ChronicleLiveThe grief-stricken family of Savannah Bentham, the 10-year-old girl tragically killed after an attack by her new XL Bully pet dog, have paid a heartbroken tribute to their daughter.
The family said in a statement from their Malton home: "We are utterly shocked and devastated by what happened to Savannah. We can't believe we have lost our wonderful girl who we love so much.
"We thank everyone for their support and kindness as we struggle to come to terms with our loss. We ask that our family's privacy is respected while we grieve for Savannah."
Savannah tragically died from her severe injuries following the dog's attack at around 4.15pm on Friday. She lost her life despite desperate attempts to save her at the scene by paramedics and a good Samaritan who came to her aid.
North Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident, and confirmed that the dog, which is understood to be a type of XL Bully, would be euthanised. An inquest into Savannah's death is expected to be opened and adjourned soon, reports Yorkshire Live.
The head teacher of the school attended by Savannah has described the youngster as a "model student". Rachel Wells, head of West Heslerton C of E Primary School, said they had lost a little girl "who came to school every day with a smile for everyone and lots of lively chatter".
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police stated: "Our officers are continuing to support the family while enquiries continue. We again urge people not to speculate about the incident and to respect the family's wish for privacy to grieve in peace."
