County Durham biker suffered fatal brain injury in crash with two cars
by Gavin Havery · ChronicleLiveAn inquest has been opened into the death of a motorcyclist who died after a crash with two other cars.
Shane Gaskin, 20, from Copley Lane in Bishop Auckland, suffered fatal injuries in the collision on Dentgate Lane in Barnard Castle. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6pm on November 11.
Paramedics took Mr Gaskin to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by road ambulance but he died as a result of his injuries. An ongoing investigation has been launched by Durham Constabulary to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
County Durham’s Senior Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield opened an inquest at the coroners’ court in Crook Civic Centre last week.
In a statement submitted to the court, Coroner’s Officer Kelly Taylor said: "I understand the circumstances to be that Mr Gaskin was the driver of a motorbike that was involved in a collision with a car on November 11.
"He was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he died from his injuries."
A post-mortem examination was carried out by Dr Emma Watson who concluded the cause of death was hypoxic ischaemic brain injury and traumatic cardiac arrest following a road traffic accident. The proceedings have been concluded pending further investigation.
