North East politicians issue warning about scam winter fuel allowance text message

The message claims to come from the government and states the winter fuel allowance will soon be sent out. It asks the recipient to then click on an attached link to claim the allowance.
The text states: "UK government living expenses subsidy 2023-2024: We will begin disbursing living expenses to help you get through the winter. If you receive information proving that you are eligible to apply, please update your information in the link as soon as possible to claim it.
"We will close the application deadline on October 11 2024. Please apply as soon as possible. If you fail to receive it after the time, we will reallocate the funds to other citizens in need." A link to follow is also attached to the message.
A number of local politicians have since taken to social media to warn people about the dodgy text. Georgina Hill, an independent councillor in Berwick, David Smith, MP for North Northumberland, and Alan Campbell, MP for Tynemouth have all issued warnings.
David Smith wrote: "I have been made aware of scam emails circulating about the Winter Fuel Payment and other winter payments, which may look like the picture attached. Please do not follow links in messages sent by unknown or odd numbers, and remember that the Government does not announce major payments through text messages. Take time to check with vulnerable neighbours or relatives that they are protected from these scams.
"If you are eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, you will receive it automatically. If you need more serious help, then you may be eligible for the the Household Support Fund."
Those born before September 23 1958 can get either £200 or £300 to help pay heating bills for winter 2024 to 2025. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’.
