Firefighters are currently working to bring a large blaze under control at allotments in Moss Side, Wrekenton.

The fire was reported to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) at 7.16pm on Thursday, and since then the fire service has been working with emergency service colleagues to bring it under control. Just before 10pm, the fire service confirmed the fire was ongoing.

Members of the public living nearby have been advised to keep all windows and doors closed due to high levels of smoke. There are five fire engines and a support vehicle in attendance, with one officer and 24 firefighters.

In a statement from the scene, the fire service officer in charge of the response said: "We have five pumping appliances and one command support vehicle, along with one officer in attendance and 24 firefighters who are tackling a fire in allotments.

"We are collaborating with our blue light partners to bring this under control."

Earlier, on X, the fire service posted: "TWFRS are currently dealing with a large incident on Moss Side in Wrekenton. All residents in the local area are advised to keep all windows and doors closed at this current time due to high levels of smoke."

Moss Side allotments are just north of Ravensworth Golf Course in the Wrekenton area of Gateshead.
