Newcastle's Grey Street named one of the most picturesque streets in UK
by Daniel Hall · ChronicleLiveA Newcastle city centre street has been named one of the most picturesque in the UK in a study.
Grey Street, in the heart of Newcastle city centre, has long been held in high esteem by Geordies, visitors and even architecture experts. Built in the 1830s with the aid of several architects, the Georgian street was named Britain's Best by BBC Radio 4 listeners in 2010.
Home to some of the city's best-known buildings, including the Theatre Royal and Central Arcade, it is lined with restaurants, bars and businesses. It's recently undergone a bit of modernisation, and in October, the first ever Grey Street Gala took place to celebrate the works' completion.
Work got under way in January 2023 to widen the footpaths, add seating with images and information about businesses which historically traded on the street, and planted rain gardens. The top part of the street, by Grey's Monument, is currently hosting a section of the Newcastle Christmas Markets and Moosenwirt bar.
A study carried out analysing Instagram data found that Grey Street was the UK's 13th most popular on the social media platform, with 28,600 hashtags. It was the highest-ranking street in the North East, and ahead of the likes of Edinburgh's Royal Mile and Circus Lane.
The top six most picturesque streets in the country were all in London, with Oxford Street coming out on top. The study was carried out by Leeds Locksmiths.
