Gateshead's over 60s daytime night club becomes 'hottest ticket in town' as crowds flock

Since it launched in September, over 60s daytime club Boomers at The Tynesider in Gateshead has become a massive success

A daytime nightclub for the over-60s in Gateshead has been forced to become a ticketed event, as crowds flocked to get into its first two events and some people were left waiting at the door.

Developed by the team behind the Tynesider, which opened on the high street over the summer and hosted in conjunction with their neighbours Age UK, Boomers is a daytime party for people who have been left feeling there aren't enough opportunities for them to let their hair down in the local area.

With a soundtrack of classic songs, Motown anthems and Northern Soul favourites, Boomers was packed out for its launch in September, with bottles of wine adorning tables, along with Hawaiian style garlands and party hats, as the older generation showed the young'uns that they definitely still know how to party.

The Tynesider was quickly at capacity as soon as the doors opened for the first Boomers, with demand so high that the decision was made to make it a ticketed event going forward, with its second event proving just as popular.

Blown away by its success so far, The Tynesider's Luisa Scott, Boomers superstar DJ, told ChronicleLive: "‘We had to issue tickets to manage the crowd, and within the first hour, we sold more than half! We share the money raised from ticket sales between AgeUK Gateshead and Boomers, which allows us to keep bringing bigger and better parties. Collaborating with AgeUK Gateshead has been mazing—they’ve been invaluable in helping with organisation, running the events, and even providing DJs.’

This Wednesday, October 16, Boomers will take on a clubbing theme and also delighted with how it's been received so far, Kate Wildish, Community Development Senior from AgeUK Gateshead, said: "The best part is seeing the community come together, with older people staying active, socialising, and having fun. Lee, the owner, has added more tables and chairs to the venue, and there are plans to extend the Tynesider Pub so we can welcome even more guests soon.’"
