Beaumont Terrace in Westerhope, Newcastle, is cordoned off after a wall and window were damaged by what police believe to be a firearm.
Officers were called to the terraced street at around 4.30am this morning after a "suspected firearm" was fires at a property. No one is understood to have been injured and the offender is believed to have fled the scene.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Emergency services attended and no-one was reported to have been injured. We believe this to be an isolated incident and a full investigation is under way. Officers remain at the scene to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to residents.
"A section of Beaumont Terrace is currently closed to traffic to allow for enquiries to be carried out."
This morning a large stretch of Beaumont Terrace remains cordoned off while forensics officers work at the scene. They could be seen looking under cars on the terraced street.
One local woman said she did not realise what was going on until her partner phoned her.
The 48-year-old said: “I don’t know anything. I was up quite early and I hadn’t heard anything. It was people I know in the area that rang us this morning and said ‘what’s going on’? It is shocking. It’s a quiet little street, it’s a nice little village. You don’t expect something like that."
A number of residents of Beaumont Terrace were this morning leaving the street and being picked up by waiting friends and relatives.
Police are also appealing for witnesses.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 4.30am today we received a report of a disturbance on Beaumont Terrace in the Westerhope area of Newcastle. It was reported that a suspected firearm had been discharged at a property, causing damage to a window and wall. The offender then made off from the scene.
"Anyone with information regarding the report should send us a direct message on social media, use the live chat function on our website or go to the report pages, also on the website.
