Suspect rescued from bog by police officer's baton after being chased down in Bishop Auckland
by Owen Younger · ChronicleLiveA man was rescued from a bog by an officer's baton as Durham police officers chased down suspects in Bishop Auckland.
The Chief Constable Rachel Bacon saw two balaclava-clad suspects riding a scooter through the market place on Wednesday, when she was out in the town.
Bishop Auckland Police officer James Sewell then alerted his colleagues from the force’s Durham Roads & Armed Policing Motorbike Unit, who tracked the suspects down.
With the help of the police helicopter, the suspects were found next to some boggy fields, after the trio dumped the bike and tried to flee.
Two of the suspects were chased down by police, and the third, who tried to escape through a bog, despite not being able to swim, had to be rescued by an officer, who extended his baton for him to grab hold of.
A man and two teenage boys were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and drug-driving. They were then taken into custody where they remain today.
The scooter, which had been reported stolen from Bishop Auckland, was recovered and will now be returned to its rightful owner.
