A knife-attack suspect has appeared in court after a man was stabbed near a Metro station.

Scott Orr is alleged to have left the victim, in his 30s, with "slash and stab" wounds to his face, neck and torso. Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard that the 50-year-old was suspected of carrying out the attack on New Bridge Street, close to Manors Metro Station, in Newcastle City Centre, at around 11.45pm on October 23.

Orr, of Westbourne Avenue, Walker, was later arrested and charged with attempted murder and appeared in the dock in custody on Thursday, November 7. Because of the seriousness of the charge, no pleas were taken during the brief hearing.

Instead, Orr spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and to confirm he understood the allegation against him. James Long, prosecuting, said: "It's a matter that must be dealt with at the crown court, so, I would invite you to send it there.

"The offence is alleged to have happened along a bridge at 11.45pm on October 23. The injured party and the defendant are unknown to each other."

Mr Long added: "The victim was taken to hospital and is recovering. There were serious and significant injuries suffered."

Sending the case to Newcastle Crown Court and remanding Orr in custody, District Judge Kate Meek said: "On December 5, you will appear at Newcastle Crown Court. It's in the same building, just a different court room.

"The prosecution asked for a remand in custody and your solicitor makes no application for bail on your behalf. You will be remanded in custody until your next appearance.

"Between now and then, make sure you attend conferences with you solicitor."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Officers investigating the assault remain keen to hear from any witnesses who were in the New Bridge Street area at the time of the incident, as well as those who may have dashcam footage from their vehicles."

Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police quoting log number NP-20241023-1260.
