National Express to boost capacity from Newcastle after Megabus scales back operations
by Daniel Hall · ChronicleLiveNational Express will boost its network with additional services on key intercity and airport routes after Megabus announced a reduction in UK services.
National Express will increase its capacity by adding hundreds of additional seats per week on routes between Newcastle and London, including to Heathrow Airport from December 4. The news comes after low-cost operator Megabus announced huge cut-backs in its operations due to "low passenger demand", with only cross-border services still serving Newcastle.
Ed Rickard, network director at National Express, said increasing capacity and frequency on key intercity and airport routes would make it easier for people to "get where they need to be". He added: "We recognise the growing need for reliable, affordable and convenient public transport options.
"We’re expecting to see strong demand and have the flexibility to add more capacity when needed, especially as people start to make travel plans for the festive season."
National Express reported a 25% increase in customers last year, with 19 million customers travelling on its coach network during 2023. In comparison, Megabus carries between four and five million passengers annually.
Tickets from Newcastle to London start at £16.90 on National Express. More information can be found on the coach operator's website.
