Owen Rutherford is accused of causing the death of David Hain by driving dangerously on the A68 Beukley Bank on October 1 last year. The 25-year-old also faces three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving - which relates to three other people.
It is alleged that Rutherford, of Ridsdale, Northumberland, was behind the wheel of a Seat Leon at the time. Wearing a white shirt with a tie and black jumper, he appeared for a first hearing at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
