A taxi driver has appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting and imprisoning a woman in his cab.

David Duduveica is alleged to have carried out the offences on a street in North Shields on August 4 last year. The 24-year-old appeared in the dock at Newcastle Magistrates' Court this week charged with sexual assault and false imprisonment.

Because of the second allegation could only be heard at the crown court, no pleas were taken to either matters. During the brief hearing, the charges were read out and Duduveica, of Hampstead Road, in Benwell, was asked if he understood them.

Sending him to Newcastle Crown Court, District Judge Paul Currer said: "Your case is so serious that it cannot be dealt with at this court. So, I'm sending your case to Newcastle Crown Court.

"It is in the same building, just on the floors above. You will have to come back here on November 13 at 10am. " In the meantime, District Judge Currer released Duduveica on conditional bail.

Those conditions include that he must not contact the suspected victim and he must reside at the address he gave to the court.
