A woman has appeared in court after a female suffered "extensive bruising" following a suspected assault.

Stephanie Kerr is alleged to have attacked the woman over a number of hours, leaving her with injuries "all over her body". A court heard that the suspected assault took place on December 23 last year at the 34-year-old's address in Holystone, North Tyneside.

Kerr, of Holystone Drive, was in the dock this week to face one allegation of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. She didn't enter a plea during the brief hearing at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.

Ruth Forster, prosecuting, said the case should be sent to the crown court. She added: "The Crown would say that this is not suitable for summary trial." Mrs Forster said the alleged attack involved "punching, biting and strangling" and left the victim with "extensive bruising throughout her body".

Alanna Wesencraft, defending, agreed that the case should be sent to the crown court. Magistrates declined jurisdiction and Kerr was released on unconditional bail to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on October 24.
