TK Maxx plans to relocate to a new home in Sunderland city centre
The plans are linked to the unit formerly occupied by a Tesco Express supermarket, which closed in spring 2022, as well as three smaller retail units
by Chris Binding · ChronicleLiveMajor retailer TK Maxx has submitted plans to Sunderland City Council for a new location within The Bridges shopping centre.
The proposal, put forward by Reynolds Associates, involves merging several units, including the one previously occupied by Tesco Express which closed in spring 2022.
The plan includes various modifications such as altering access points, installing new fire doors and adjusting existing ones, and creating a new loading bay area. The proposed layout indicates a maximum occupancy of 360 people on the sales floor.
Currently located on Crowtree Road, TK Maxx would move to this newly adapted space within The Bridges if the plans are approved.
The design and access statement further elaborates: "This is accompanied with the provision of a secure gated compound."
The proposal also includes the replacement of infill panels at high level clerestory windows at ground and first floors. "No existing access arrangement for either the outlined units or its neighbours is compromised".
The planning application notes that the unit's doors would be "adapted to provide required security rating and escape / access provision required by [the] tenant".
A verdict on the planning application will be reached after a period of council consultation. Sunderland City Council’s planning portal website has set a decision deadline of November 19, 2024.
