New Post Office expected to open in Northumberland town centre two years after closure

Berwick town centre has been without a Post Office since October 2022

A new Post Office could be set to open in a Northumberland town centre two years after the previous one closed.

Services in Berwick town centre came to an end in October 2022 following the closure of the outlet in the Four Seasons gift shop on Marygate. Along with the town centre closure, a branch on North Road also shut, leaving the only branch in Tweedmouth, meaning there are no branches serving the north of the town.

Post Office bosses, community groups and councillors have been actively searching for a new site. The Post Office has now confirmed an application has been submitted and they are in the "very early stages" of getting the branch up and running.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “An application to operate a Post Office in Berwick-upon-Tweed has been submitted and we’re at a very early stage of working with the applicant to get a branch up and running.

"We know how much the local community have wanted Post Offices restored to the area and we hope to be able to provide further details in the coming weeks.”

The loss of the Post Office was described as "worrying" by councillor Catherine Seymour, who represents Berwick North, as the town also lost the TSB Bank.
