Application for alcohol licence for North Shields micropub faces 46 objectors

An application for an alcohol licence for a new prospective micropub in North Shields has generated 46 objections.

North Tyneside Council's licensing sub-committee will convene next Monday to consider a premises licence for the Tipsy Pig pub at 12A Russell Street. The firm behind the application, Pickled Piglet Ltd, has requested permission to serve alcohol between 10am to 9.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday.

According to the application, the premises will primarily offer craft beers, alongside a small selection of ales, wines, spirits, and lager. It adds: "The atmosphere will be relaxed, with background music only."

However, objections have been lodged with the local authority, including a letter, signed off by 46 residents, opposing the granting of an alcohol licence on the premises.

According to the joint letter of objection: "Both the structure of the venue and location are wholly unsuitable for a business of this kind. This is a residential area and this type of business would be better suited in a non-residential area.

"We feel there are enough pubs in the centre of North Shields already."

The letter also highlights residents' concerns ranging from the protection of children from harm to potential public nuisance and anti-social behaviour.

The letter also highlights previous problems at this venue, under different management, when it was the arts and music venue 'Studio 12A'. When the owners of Studio 12A applied for a temporary alcohol licence for May 5 and 6 last year Northumbria Police objected.

The objection was based on complaints the police had received due to noise and anti-social behaviour complaints at a previous two-day event at Studio 12A in May 2023.

Pickled Piglet's application states: "The venue will target a mature clientele with a strict over-21s policy, creating a welcoming and controlled environment for its customers."

Councillors will meet at the council's Cobalt HQ at 10am on Monday to make a decision on the application.
