'Glowing disco on wheels' coming to Northumberland town as Lantern Parade returns for fourth year

by · ChronicleLive

A "glowing disco on wheels" is set to light up a Northumberland town as a popular festival returns for the fourth time. Hexham Lantern Parade returns for the fourth year in a row, after "three hugely successful" years from 2021 - 2023.

This year, the parade will be led by a giant lantern created by members of Gateway into the Community, a non-profit which supports people with learning disabilities. They are working with artists Deni Riach and Ruth Thompson to realise their design.

Meanwhile, Groove and Glow, the disco on wheels, will lead people to Hexham's shambles to "timeless disco hits". The performance by LGBTQIA+ arts organisation Curious Arts, is a custom-built LED trike with a built-in sound system playing disco tracks aimed at getting people dancing.

Katy Taylor, Queen's Hall artistic director, said she was delighted the festival was returning and that Groove and Glow would make its Hexham debut. She said: "With lots of other surprises to look forward to along the way, it’s guaranteed to better than ever. We know the parade has fast become something families look forward to - and can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on this year!"

Phil Douglas, chief executive officer at Curious Arts, said: "We’re looking forward to bringing Groove and Glow, our new touring work, to the Hexham Lantern Parade this November. This glowing, interactive disco on wheels will kick off the festivities, bringing people together through music, dance, and community spirit. We can’t wait to light up the night with everyone!"
