Scottish Power issues apology for failing to fix Tweedmouth streetlights

The company was criticised over a similar issue this time last year

A councillor has slammed Scottish Power after streetlights were left faulty for months.

Coun Georgina Hill said the energy giants were contacted about a power problem affecting streetlights in Tweedmouth in July. However, months later, the issue is still ongoing.

This is despite the fact Scottish Power set a deadline of early August to carry out repairs. It follows a similar issue in the same area last year, where residents were left in the dark for weeks because of delays.

Coun Hill said: "Residents are having to wait months for street lighting repairs and deadlines are constantly being missed. Just the latest example of Scottish Power’s poor performance is the two street lights off in Main Street, Tweedmouth.

"The county council contacted Scottish Power in July about a power source issue there. Scottish Power gave a deadline of early August and, with depressing predictability, this has still not been resolved.

"Their performance continues to be woeful and, with their eye-watering profits, it is simply not acceptable. I have contacted Scottish Power again to discuss this issue and asked for the council leader to help escalate the matter."

Coun Hill previously raised the issue at a meeting of the county council, pointing out Scottish Power had made a net profit of £487 million in 2022. In response to Coun Hill's complaints, Scottish Power has issued an apology.

A spokeswoman for SP Energy Networks said: "We’re committed to providing our customers and communities with the best service possible. To help provide a swifter response to streetlighting repairs in the Northumberland County Council area, we’ve brought in two additional excavation contractors and are working to progress outstanding repairs.

"Our contractor is currently applying for the necessary permits to undertake the works and traffic management needed to complete the repairs on Tweedmouth Main Street as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
