by · ChronicleLive

A man from Stanley who raped and attempted to suffocate his victim has been jailed for over ten years. Shane Youll, 37, physically and sexually assaulted the woman, leaving her with cuts and bruises.

Fortunately, she managed to raise the alarm using a stranger’s phone after Youll attacked her in the early hours of May 17. He was found guilty of rape, assault by penetration, intentional strangulation, causing actual bodily harm and common assault, and was jailed for ten years and six months at Teesside Crown Court this week, as well as being made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order.

Detective Constable Tony Kolodziej, of Durham Constabulary, said: “Shane Youll is a violent man who subjected his victim to a horrifying ordeal. His abuse has caused immense physical, emotional and mental harm to his victim.

"I hope this sentence will bring some closure to the victim and help her to start to rebuild her life. If you have been raped or sexually assaulted, please tell us – you will be listened to, and we will believe you.

"We know it can be difficult, but we have specially trained officers who will support you every step of the way."
