Stanley man allegedly left woman's tooth 'hanging by thread' after 'punching her in face'
by Sara Nichol · ChronicleLiveA man has appeared in court accused of leaving a woman's tooth "hanging by a threat" after he allegedly punched her in the face in a city centre bar.
John Cherry is suspected of attacking the woman inside City Vaults, in Newcastle, in the early hours of August 28 last year. A court heard that there was an altercation between two groups inside the bar but that Cherry then allegedly grabbed a female by the neck and punched her to the side of the face.
He is then suspected of throwing glasses before striking the same woman again, this time in the mouth. Magistrates were told that the victim fell back, was briefly unconscious before waking and realising her tooth was "hanging by a thread" from her gum.
The woman was taken to hospital and the tooth was replanted but its prognosis "isn't positive" and she may well need an implant. Cherry, of Murray Park, in Stanley, County Durham, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court to plead not guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Jonathan Stirland, prosecuting, said the case was suitable to be tried before magistrates. He added: "It's an alleged assault in a public house. The mechanism appears to be fairly straightforward as it's a couple of punches, with one appearing to have made contact with the victim's mouth, causing the tooth to be dislodged."
Michael Crowe, defending, agreed that the case could be kept at the magistrates' court and said Cherry denied he was the one who assaulted the woman.
Cherry, 25, was released on unconditional bail to next appear at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court for trial on June 6 next year.
