Darlington pubs introduce QR code system for reporting drink drivers during festive season
by Bill Edgar · ChronicleLiveA fresh bid to curb the menace of drink and drug driving in Darlington has kicked off. Customers will be able tip off police about suspected drunk drivers from the bar itself, by scanning QR codes that alert the authorities.
Backed by Durham Constabulary alongside police and crime commissioner Joy Allen, this drive is part of an overarching strategy to enhance nighttime safety and put a brake on reckless road behaviour. They're eager to send a stern warning to party-goers, drumming home the dangers of driving under the influence "to prevent somebody being killed on our roads".
PCC Allen commented: "We do not want anybody drink or drug driving in County Durham and Darlington."
This initiative coincides with the broader Operation Limit campaign running across December, aimed at reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured in crashes over the festive season. PCC Allen warned potential drink and drug drivers that QR codes make it simpler to catch criminals.
“Our officers are too often knocking on that door, giving somebody the message nobody wants to give,” PCC Allen added. “We can prevent those deaths – and it’s a key part of what we’re doing today. We need your support to get the message out: do not drink or drug drive. The risks are high and the consequences severe.”
The scheme is initially being rolled out across several bars, pubs, and clubs in Darlington – and it is hoped it can be expanded throughout County Durham next year.
Christoforos Moumouris, owner of The Cherry Tree, said the safety of his customers is a priority. “We believe it will help set a good example for people to drink and drive safely and help the community, reducing accidents and deaths. It’s a really good idea to keep people safe and easy to use, specifically over the festive period.”
Durham Constabulary said the initiative is part of its zero tolerance approach to people breaking the law. PC Lee Blaney said: “We’re very passionate about people using the roads while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, getting their licences taken off them and locked up because we see the catastrophic consequences it can have on our society.”
