Man taken to hospital after being injured in Byker shooting as Northumbria Police arrest 21-year-old

A man has been taken to hospital after being injured in a shooting in Byker, with Northumbria Police arresting a 21-year-old man in connection with the report. The victim, in his 40s, was found in the Headlam Street area with injuries consistent with having been caused by a firearm.

Police received a report of a disturbance at around 1.50pm today, where they found the man, who was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Officers are still at the scene, as they carry out enquiries in order to understand the full circumstances of the incident.

The 21-year-old man who was arrested remains in police custody at this time, as the investigation continues. Police have also appealed for any further information that could assist their enquiries to be sent to them directly.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 1.50pm today (Wednesday) we received a report of a disturbance in the Headlam Green area of Byker in Newcastle. Emergency services attended the scene where they found a man with injuries consistent with having been caused by a firearm.

"The man – in his 40s – was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and locate those involved.

"Officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to the public. A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the report, and remains in police custody at this time.
