North Tyneside Community Speedwatch expansion timeline unveiled
by Austen Shakespeare · ChronicleLiveNorth Tyneside Council has unveiled its timeline for deploying further Community Speedwatch volunteers to help clamp down on reckless driving.
Council documents now state that the newly formed Northumbria Safer Roads Partnership has been approved between the local authority's partners and the emergency services. The documents, which form part of the council's Green Sub Committee meeting, which meets today, also state that between November and December this year, Northumbria Police will appraise applications and recruit volunteers for the speed watch scheme.
Between December 2024 and January 2025, the force will then train the volunteers for their eventual deployment throughout North Tyneside between January and February 2025.
The local authority's report concluded: "The Council will work with the Police to identify opportunities to deploy CSW volunteers and undertake analysis of the data obtained to help inform future road safety interventions."
Council meetings earlier this year also revealed that North Shields is the only place in North Tyneside with a community speed watch programme. Residents can make applications to join the Community Speedwatch team via Northumbria Police's website.
If applicants are successful, teams of two to four volunteers could be stationed on 30mph and 40mph roads, pending risk assessments.
Volunteers could also be deployed to 20mph zones if there are enough concerns raised about a particular stretch of road.
Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Ensuring all of our residents and visitors are safe on our roads is one of our top priorities, and I am pleased that, alongside Northumbria Police, we are progressing this Community Speed Watch scheme.
“This forms part of our wider plans to improve travel safety and speed compliance on our roads and I look forward to seeing it come into place. We will soon be beginning the process of recruiting volunteers, so if you’re interested in getting involved, please get in touch with us.”
