Eva Longoria has moved out of “dystopian” US following Trump’s election win
“I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere”
by Adam England · NMEEva Longoria has shared that she’s moved out of the US and splits her time between Spain and Mexico – particularly after Donald Trump’s election win.
Longoria, who’s long been vocal in her support of Democratic politicians and progressive causes, is a ninth-generation Texan. She moved to California in her twenties, living in Los Angeles, and is married to Mexican businessman José Antonio ‘Pepe’ Bastón Patiño, who she also has a son with.
The Desperate Housewives star told Marie Claire in a new cover story: “I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”
It’s been a while since she lived in LA, but she explained that Trump’s victory was what solidified her desire to spend less time in the city – and her country as a whole. Discussing LA, she said: “I had my whole adult life here. But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then COVID happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to shit on California — it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”
Longoria, who campaigned for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and her vice-president pick Tim Walz, also said that she wasn’t as surprised that Trump won a second election: “The shocking part is not that he won. It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office. I would like to think our fight continues … if he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place.”
The actress spoke at the Democratic National Convention and used a tagline for Harris that took the Spanish translation of Barack Obama’s famous “Yes we can” slogan – ”Si se puede” – into the phrase “She se puede”.

Meanwhile, season four of Only Murders In The Building, in which Longoria plays a fictionalised version of herself, premiered in August on Disney+. NME gave it four stars, writing: “After a slightly stilted start, Only Murders soon locks into its usual rhythm. It’s a shame that scenes pairing [Steve] Martin and [Eugene] Levy – two bona fide comedy icons – aren’t fizzier, but Longoria gets some zingers. ‘In season eight of Desperate Housewives, I told them I wouldn’t return unless they legalised gay marriage – and guess what, they did,’ she tells Mabel. As the season progresses, the murder investigation becomes more gripping and the punchlines keep on coming. So, let’s hope they’re already working on their season five wish list – surely Martin Short has Catherine O’Hara’s number?”
