Netflix often choose to renew their most successful shows in the weeks or months after the release of the latest season. The Diplomat, for instance, was officially recommissioned for a second season in May 2023, just weeks after the first season’s release.
Netflix’s head of drama, Jinny Howe, said at the time: “Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler.
“After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams and Keri Russell have in store for season two.”
However, on this occasion, Netflix jumped the gun by officially confirming that season three of The Diplomat was happening before season two was even released. Cahn shared a statement (via Variety), saying: “After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY. Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.”
The show is already in production, so given the 18 month gap between seasons one and two, fans can expect to see season three in late 2025 or early 2026.
