One Martin Lewis fan is assuring others of his tried-and-tested method to get potentially drastic savings on your household necessities. Reader Karen emailed Money-Saving Expert with her story, revealing how her new home insurance quote floored her and her husband.

She shared: “Our buildings & contents auto-renewal reminder came in with a 52% price rise - even my husband commented: 'Wow, that's some hike.' I double-checked your action steps, and 30 minutes later I had saved £286 on an exact like-for-like policy.”

Karen thanked MSE for their guidance, which came from a previous edition of the MSE newsletter that touches on current issues readers are facing. Home insurance is currently at record high prices, a trend that’s been holding steady for the past year, but Consumer Intelligence highlighted that some recent 1% dips could indicate the downfall is imminent.

However, MSE and its founder has been urging households not to overlook their home insurance bill particularly as the cost of living crisis is seeing many scrape together pennies to make ends meet. The four steps Karen followed to slice her bill can also be found on the MSE website.

This starts with Karen’s first potential problem as the money-saving moguls warn against ever putting your insurance on auto-renew. Instead, the experts urge Brits to check comparison sites when it comes time to start looking at renewing their insurance.

Trying multiple comparison sites can also give you a greater chance of getting the best deal for your home and your budget. Secondly, MSE advises comparing your top choices from these sites against a quote from Direct Line, which doesn’t appear on comparison sites.

The next comparison to make is against cashback sites, which can earn you some money on certain deals with sites like Topcasback providing £35 when you buy through its comparisons. Finally, the experts recommended using a rebuild cost calculator and contents calculator to ensure you’re getting the right amount of coverage for your property.
