'Aggressive' drunk intruder removed by police at Devon school

Disruption was caused at one of the top performing schools in Devon this week when an 'aggressive' drunk gained entry into its building during the school day. Police were called to Torquay Boys' Grammar School on Wednesday, September 18, at 8.30am.

A 19-year-old man is said to have acted 'verbally and physically aggressive' on the school premises in Shiphay Manor Drive and was escorted off the site by police. The school has confirmed the intruder was not carrying any offensive weapons.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 8.40am on Wednesday of a man detained outside Torquay Boys Grammar School. It was reported that he had attended the site and behaved in a verbal and physically aggressive manner.

"A 19-year-old man from Torquay was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in a public place. He was later de-arrested while enquiries continue."

The school has confirmed parents were notified of the incident and the school day was said to have resumed as normal.

A Torquay Boys' Grammar School spokesperson said: "We can confirm a young male entered the school site at 8.30am on Wednesday morning. Members of staff including site security and safeguarding team intercepted him upon entering the building, and subsequently called the police.

"Police officers escorted him off the site to allow the school to continue with the day as normal. Families were notified shortly after the event to reassure them the situation had been resolved."

Torbay Boys' Grammar School is one of the top 20 boys’ schools in the country. Students can choose to stay on to study A levels or International Baccalaureate, meaning a wide range and combination of subjects is on offer.
