You can make rough towels 'soft and fluffy' again using one common kitchen item

White towels can lose their fluffiness over time, but one simple ingredient could make them soft and fluffy again - and it's something you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard

After numerous washes, even the plushest white towels can lose their fluffiness, becoming stiff and hard due to detergent residue, mineral buildup, or even because of the friction caused during the washing process. But don't rush to replace them just yet there's a way to bring back that desired fluffy softness.

While you might be inclined to pour fabric softener into the mix when laundering your towels, thinking it will make them softer, it could actually exacerbate the issue. Fabric softeners tend to coat the fibres of the towel, reducing their absorbency and leading to a rough, scratchy feel.

Instead, there's another product you can add to your wash - and it's something you probably already have in your washing or cooking cupboard. One person took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group to ask the question: "How do people keep [their] towels fluffy, mine always feel rough, use Spanish washing liquid and softener, thanks."

Many savvy cleaners recommended running them through the tumble dryer to give them that fluffy texture - but there's another ingredient that can help it even further. "Add white vinegar into the comfort compartment," said one person.

Another agreed, saying: "A cup of plain white vinegar instead of softener and they're perfect," and a third commented: "Add white vinegar to softener compartment, flesh and fluffy. Do not add softener. No vinegar smell and great for the washing machine. Been doing this method for years."

Deyan Dimitrov, the CEO of Laundryheap, concurred it's crucial to wash towels "correctly" to maintain their plushness. He previously stated overloading the washing machine is a no-no; for most machines, seven bath towels is the limit.

In addition, Dimitrov advices against excessive detergent usage as it can leave behind residue on the towels. Notably, he pointed out household items like white vinegar and baking soda could "transform rough towels to soft ones".

The laundry expert suggested: "Simply add 250ml of white vinegar to the washing machine drum alongside the liquid detergent you normally use and dry as normal."
