Children, staff, and parents of Dolton CofE Primary School in Torridge are celebrating the results of their latest Ofsted inspection.

The inspectors rated them very highly indeed, especially in terms of personal development and early years and foundation stage provision, both of which gained the highest rating of “outstanding”.

The report, which is now open to view online, has high praise for the encouraging, friendly atmosphere, and the positive interactions and mutual respect between staff and pupils, and among one another: “Pupils enjoy attending this small village school. Warm, supportive relationships with staff enable pupils to flourish. Pupils are enthusiastic about what each day at school has in store for them. Pupils treat one another with compassion. Pupils of all ages socialise and work together harmoniously“

The school is very closely linked with The Clinton CofE Primary School, Merton, sharing the same headteacher, and working together in many aspects including the many extra-curricular activities that take place. Earlier in the year, both schools also achieved the prestigious ACE (Association for Character Education) Quality Mark Award, two of fewer than 100 schools across the UK. The award recognises the schools’ work to ensure pupils become well-rounded individuals, giving them the foundations to go off into the world and be confident, flourishing adults and inspiring change-makers.

Ofsted inspectors added: “Developing pupils' characters is at the heart of everything the school does. Pupils value the virtues that the school wants them to acquire. They understand the relevance of these to their everyday lives, both now and for their futures. The schools’ approach to developing pupils’ character contributes strongly to the cooperative and exuberant atmosphere. Pupils, including the very youngest, concentrate well. They persist when they find learning challenging.”

When the children were asked what they think of Dolton school they said: “everyone is caring and kind to everyone”, “everyone works hard, we are confident in what we write and we are proud of our achievements”, “people have the courage to do all of the challenging work, with perseverance and resilience, and supporting each other”. And of course not forgetting to mention Sharon’s school dinners: “the school lunches are delightful and delicious!”

Headteacher Samantha Drew took over the headship less than two years ago and was praised in the report which says: “There is a new curriculum in place at the school. It is ambitious and broad, reflecting the high aspirations that the headteacher and staff have for all pupils.”

Mrs Drew was delighted with the results saying: "We are extremely proud of this really positive outcome which is a testament to the care and commitment of our staff, the support of our families and local community, And of course, a celebration of our wonderful children."

Both Dolton and The Clinton schools have provision for children from the age of 2 through to 11 and pride themselves in offering free breakfast clubs, after school clubs, and free school meals for all children (including nursery children).
