The Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Hot Air Balloon Festival, held at Aweiya Balloon Field in Taunggyi, Shan State, began on November 11 and has attracted not only locals but also visitors from far and wide.

Reports indicate that the festival has drawn a massive crowd, with vehicles heading to the event experiencing significant delays.

“The festival is unlike anything I’ve ever seen—it’s incredibly lively. The entire field is packed with spectators. The parking areas are full, and cars are even being directed to park along the roads. Private parking lots charge up to 30,000 kyats per night,” said a local attendee.

During the daytime, decorative balloons are released, while nighttime festivities feature grand illuminated hot air balloons and Seinnaban balloons.

“The crowds are even larger at night. It’s so packed that people can hardly move. The music shows are vibrant, and around seven hot air balloons are released each night. Spectators fill the field and line the surrounding hills to watch,” another attendee shared.

The festival, running from November 11 to 17, features a total of 50 hot air balloons, including 26 illuminated “grand fire” balloons and 24 “Seinnab an” balloons. Additionally, there are 147 two-legged balloons, 38 four-legged balloons, and 23 decorative group balloons competing. Other events include the Matho Robe Weaving Competition, the grand procession of communal Kathina Robes, and fireworks, promising a vibrant and festive celebration.
