Former Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung dies at 72

It has been reported that Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the former Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, passed away at Mandalay General Hospital at around 4 a.m. on October 7.

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung passed away while receiving treatment for cancer at Mandalay General Hospital.

It is known that Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the Vice Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was 72 years old at the time of his passing.

He had been serving a 29-year prison sentence on 10 charges, including corruption. However, it was reported that on October 6, 2024, the State Administration Council granted him a pardon, reducing his sentences through an official letter numbered 102(1)/8/Council(2024).

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung had been suffering from cancer while serving as the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region and had been receiving treatment for it. He was detained on February 1, 2021.

His body has been transported back to his home.
