Shock after death of Donegal man in workplace accident in Australia

The man has been named locally as 35-year-old dad Barry Breslin

A Donegal man who died at a work site in Australia has been named locally as Barry Breslin.

The 35-year-old from Kilcar died following an incident at a roadworks site in Perth. His former Gaelic club in Donegal, CLG Cill Chartha, said it was in “shock” over his death.

Investigations have now begun into the circumstances surrounding his death. A construction union said the incident involved an excavator and lifting equipment.

The WA branch of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union told the Australian 7news outlet that Breslin was working on roadworks when he died.

“Our investigations have only just begun,” the union said. “We know that the incident involved an excavator and lifting equipment (but) we’re not going to speculate on the tragic circumstances until we have the facts.

“All we know is that a worker tragically did not return home.”

In a statement, CLG Cill Chartha said: "CLG Chill Chartha would like to express our sincerest condolences to Barry’s Fiancée Melissa, his son Tommy, his parents Seamus and Mary, to his brothers Owen and Shane and to all his family and his many, many friends.

"It was a great shock to us all when the news reached us of the untimely passing of Barry in Australia.

"Barry played underage for the club for many years and is fondly remembered by the players and all who were involved at the time and to his mother Mary, a tireless volunteer and supporter of our club over the years, our hearts go out to you and your family and we pass on our prayers to you all at this sad time, ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

He is described in a family notice as "Beloved father to his son Tommy. Sadly missed by his loving Fiancée, Melissa, his parents Mary and Seamus, his brothers Owen (Beth & Hazel) and Shane (Gerard)"
