Woman, 50s, in critical condition following serious assault in Galway

A man has been arrested in connection with the serious assault of a woman in Co Galway.

Gardaí responded to reports of an assault at a residence in Ballinasloe at approximately 7pm on Monday (December 9) evening.

When gardai arrived at the property they discovered a woman in her 50s with serious injuries.

The woman was rushed from the scene to Portiuncula University Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

A man in his 50s was subsequently arrested and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a Garda station in the county. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said investigations were ongoing.

"Gardaí in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, have arrested one man following a serious assault on Monday evening, 9th December 2024," they said.

"At approximately 7:00pm, Gardaí were alerted to an assault at a residence in Ballinasloe. A woman (50s) received serious injuries.

"The injured woman was taken to Portiuncula University Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

"A man (50s) has been arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the county.

"Investigations are ongoing."
