Man who died in Donegal house fire named as well known sheep dog trainer

A man who died in a house fire in Donegal on Thursday has been named locally. The victim was Phil McGettigan who lived alone in the townland of Casheleenan.

The late Mr McGettigan was a farmer who was well-known in the local area. Mr McGettigan was a well-regarded sheep dog trainer. He was 83-years-old.

Mr McGettigan was predeceased by his wife Susan, his parents Bridget & Johnny, brother John Joseph and sister Margaret. He is sadly missed by his daughter Mairéad, sisters Josephine and Kathleen, brother Willie, nieces, nephews, great neighbours and good friends.

Gardai and the emergency services discovered the remains of Mr McGettigan at his home yesterday afternoon following a tragic house fire. Gardai have not released details of the incident.

Mr Mc Gettigan's remains were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post mortem was carried out.

Phillip’s remains reposed at the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Mountain Top, Letterkenny from 5pm to 7pm yesterday.

Phillip’s requiem mass will take place in St. Columba’s Church, Kilmacrennan on Sunday the 3rd of November at 11am followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
