Construction commenced on 2,264 homes in August 2024, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage confirmed.

For the first eight months of 2024 (January-August), 37,622 homes commenced. This is a 76 per cent increase on the 21,316 in those months in 2023. This equates to on average 224 homes commenced every working day to the end of August.

In the last 12 months (September 2023 to August 2024) there have been 49,107 units commenced, up 66 per cent from 29,565 in the prior 12 months (September 2022 to August 2023).

Of all units commenced in the first eight months of 2024 (January to August), 34 per cent were in the four Dublin local authorities.

By Local authority, the most units commenced this year so far have been in Dublin City (5,321) followed by Fingal (3,612) and Cork City (3,598). The lowest number of units commenced have been in Leitrim (52), Longford (83) and Roscommon (131).
