Mark Ruffalo rallies rising Cork movie star Alice Oliver to stop LNG coming to Ireland

"They need to remove the LNG fast tracking and prioritisation as a strategic infrastructure from the Planning Bill and permanently just ban LNG now"

Mark Ruffalo has recruited rising Cork actor Alice Oliver to help stop the Irish government from ushering in a future powered by potentially fracked gas.

The climate advocate and Hollywood megastar has been aiding the fight against fracking, the use of fracked gas and liquified natural gas in Ireland since a US company sought to build a major LNG facility in the protected Shannon estuary.

That's because LNG from America is largely fracked gas and the Dark Waters actor has long been advocating for communities impacted by the practice.

But the issue is now about to come to a head as LNG is marked as 'strategic infrastructure' in the Planning Bill up for approval at the Dáil on Wednesday night, after the High Court ruled government policy on LNG is not clear when it overturned a planning decision to stop Shannon LNG.

In a video chat shared by Mark Ruffalo on his X profile, he told Alice Oliver: "They are trying to jam through a Bill to fast track building liquified natural gas terminals that would import fracked gas from the United States and I need you to help me tell the Irish people all about it.

"What's worse is that the Green Party, which promised the voters they would stop the import of fracked gas and LNG when they joined the coalition government in 2020. But since then they have been opening the door for the Irish government to build an LNG terminal."

While the government's energy security review said LNG was not needed, proposals later emerged for a state-led LNG facility. In recent weeks, Eamon Ryan said it may be no longer needed. But as energy minister, he is yet to rule it out completely while American firm, New Fortress Energy, is still fighting for permission to build a commercial LNG facility in Ireland.

Alice said: "Green Party breaking their environmental promises? You can't make this stuff up. They seem to have lost the plot entirely now, so what can we do? "

Mark says the demand is that "the greens get off gas and stop LNG - that's the best thing we could do". "They need to remove the LNG fast tracking and prioritisation as a strategic infrastructure from the Planning Bill and permanently just ban LNG now. Everyone, Irish or Irish at heart needs to go out and sign this petition - GreensOffGas.org - that's what we need to do."
